6th Degree Black Belt · Creator of American Freestyle Tai-Jitsu
Established in 2010. A tradition of learning, teaching and growing together.
Phil started training in Belfast in 1991. His path through Tae Kwon Do, Japanese Ju-Jutsu, MMA, grappling, sword arts and Filipino weapons training led him to create American Freestyle Tai-Jitsu in 2010. He still trains with the conviction that a teacher should remain a student.
As a Kyoshi, a teacher of teachers, Phil wants to raise the next generation of lady and gentleman warriors. Respect, honor, courage, loyalty, integrity, honesty and compassion are values meant to travel home from the mat.

It is normal for a new student to feel excited and a little unsure. A first class is a chance to meet the instructor, try the movements and see how the dojo feels.
Come in comfortable clothes and bring water. Tell the instructor about the student’s age, experience and goals. Some families want confidence and focus; others are looking for fitness or practical self-defense. That conversation helps the team recommend a class.
Students do not need to know the techniques before they arrive. They can watch, ask questions and take the next step at their own pace. The goal of the first visit is to find a place where they feel welcome and want to return.
Try a class freeA good afternoon has room for movement, learning and connection. The details of pickup and the school-day schedule matter, too.
Ask your dojo which schools are on its current pickup routes, how transportation works, what students do after arrival and when pickup at the dojo takes place. Camp availability may vary by location.
Victory’s fleet of vans supports its after-school pickup program. A conversation with your local team is the best way to check the route, space and program that work for your child.
Contact your dojoKyoshi Phil’s vision draws on Bushido: the practice of respect, courage, integrity, compassion and steady effort in daily life.
Technique is one part of training. The deeper work is learning to keep going when something is difficult, to treat a training partner with care and to carry that discipline beyond the mat.
Phil describes himself as a forever student. That spirit of learning shapes the way Victory teaches: each class offers a chance to improve, support someone else and find a new kind of strength.
